The Vermont School of Ministry is a service to the members and churches of the Vermont Conference. It seeks to provide some Continuing Education for laity and pastors, a foundation for those in discernment about being a Licensed Minister, and education and training for those who would like to increase their abilities as a lay preacher or worship leader. Supply Preaching Certificate Program

It is hoped to offer this in September 2017

Anyone can preach or lead worship. This program will help you do it better and more confidently. There is a real need for supply preachers. Completion of this Certification will noted on our Pulpit Supply List. It is completed in less that 1 year.


The program consists of:

  1. sixteen 1 1/2 hour webinars offered twice each month on Monday evenings: 7-8:30

  2. two 3 1/2 hour practicum sessions at the end of the program

  3. reading/writing components for each session.

  4. generally a 5 page sermon that is due one week after the class session

Assignments receive written comments from the instructor and a grade.


The classes will cover: Exegesis for Preaching, Communicating with a Congregation: Sermon Structure & Delivery, Preaching from the Lectionary, Preaching the Old Testament, Christology, Theological Reflection, Planning and Leading Worship, Preaching the New Testament, Trinity, UCC Identity, The Ethics of Supply Preaching, Plus, two preaching practicum sessions


Cost of Program is $585, plus books.





In partnership with a Committee on Ministry, the Christian Leadership Program is designed as a foundation for Licensed Ministry and as a part of discerning a call to licensed ministry.  It can be completed in three or more years.


Requirements for completion of the Christian Leadership Program:

  1. Be in the Discernment process with the Ministerial Standards and Standings Committee of the Vermont Conference. Please note, if your church membership is in the Windsor-Orange Association, the Grafton Orange Sullivan Association, or the Southwest Association then you will have to see if your Association’s Committee on Ministry will consider this program as preparation for Licensure.

  2. Completion of these twelve courses: Old Testament I& II, New Testament I&II, Resurrection to the Reformation, Intro to Christian Theology, American Church History, UCC History and Polity, Liturgy & Worship, Pastoral Care, Congregational Life, Ethics.

  3. Completion of Boundary Awareness Training

  4. Participation in Vermont Conference Workshops and Training Events

  5. One Year of Supervised Ministry




Expected Classes in a three year rotation:

  • Old Testament I & II

  •  New Testament I & II

  • History of the Christian Church

  •  Introduction to Christian Theology

  •  American Church History

  • UCC History & Polity

  • Liturgy & Worship

  • Pastoral Care

  • Congregational Life

  • Ethics



This program is designed for persons who want to deepen their understanding and knowledge of Christianity that goes beyond what may be offered in a local church setting. This program offers two classes each semester. All classes are done as a video conference, provide 20 hours of instruction, and includes reading and writing with feed back from instructor. Instructors are PhDs.

Cost is $344 per class or $683 for 2 classes in 1 semester

Auditing costs $269 per class and includes only the online class portion: i.e. no papers or instructor feed back.
